Ecuador Scouts break a Guinness World Record
The vision and leadership of one Scout, has inspired over 57,000 volunteers across Ecuador to plant 765,073 trees. These volunteer members of the public are following the leadership of Scouting and in the process have become Messengers of Peace.
The impact of this Scouting leadership has been unprecedented. Not only has it sparked communities all over Ecuador and the world into taking action, but also it’s broken a Guinness World Record and is driving their country to achieving their target of zero deforestation by 2017.
The Guinness World Record was awarded for planting the most species ever in eight hours, and in over 237 locations! In fact every Scout group in the country took part in the plant-a-thon – known locally as ‘Siembraton’ – and was the motivation for the Ministry of Environment, the President and Scout Rafael Correa, and communities up and down the land to support it.
It’s amazing to think that the vision of one passionate Scout has lead thousands of people to taking action. But we actually have 40 million young people, Scouts and Messengers of Peace, all leading social change in communities turning small actions into massive impacts.
To every Scout in Ecuador, Congratulations and keep up the great work!
