In recognition of John Geoghegan
The significant contribution of long-standing Director, John Geoghegan, was recognised at the recent meeting of the World Scout Foundation Board in Stockholm, where he was thanked for twenty years of service to the Foundation and World Scouting.
Amongst the numerous highlights spanning his two decades, we will forever remain grateful for his efforts to drive and increase fundraising in support of World Scouting, and in particular for spearheading the Messengers of Peace Initiative, introducing numerous Regal Circle Members to the Foundation, and for doing this with great hospitality, humour and passion for the Movement.
The Foundation Board Meeting, which took place in Stockholm on 2 and 3 September, recognised John’s longstanding and significant contributions. WSF Honorary Chair, HM King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden, paid tribute to John at the Board dinner at the Royal Palace and led a special awards ceremony to present him with the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Officer First Class. See photos of the award ceremony in the gallery below.
Upon receiving the Royal Order of the Polar Star, John said, “I am humbled. We are humbled. And I think all of us should be humbled as this is on behalf of everybody in the whole team. Your Majesty, thank You very much indeed, it has been an honour and a pleasure to work with You for twenty years.”
New Chair of the Foundation, HRH The Crown Prince Guillaume of Luxembourg, added his warm appreciation saying, "Congratulations, dear John, on being awarded this important award in recognition of your work for the World Scout Foundation. Awards are tokens of gratitude and respect, but even beyond the medal, you can be very proud of what you have achieved for World Scouting. Your exceptional dedication and sense of humour will remain an inspiration to us all.”
Long-standing Board Member Margot Bogert shared memories of working with John across the years, her enjoyment of this time and appreciation for his work. She warmly led thanks to Eimear Geoghegan, for her support over twenty years to John and the Foundation.
And John's contribution to the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM) was recognised with a special plaque and photos presented by WOSM Chair, Andy Chapman and WOSM Secretary General, Ahmad Alhendawi.
John’s impact on the Movement and on the wide network of Scouts, BP Fellows, friends and colleagues, has been captured in a private book of personal messages, which was presented to John prior to the Stockholm meetings, by the staff of the Foundation, along with a commemorative gift and a special donation to his original Dublin Scout Group, in John’s name. Thank you to everyone who participated.
As previously announced, John Geoghegan will continue to support the Foundation by focusing on the future partnership with donors in Saudi Arabia.
